From the moment Rene Lacoste, the seven-time Grand Slam tennis champion, stepped on the court at the 1926 U.S. Open championship in a white, short-sleeved, loosely knit pique cotton shirt with a flat, unstarched collar and shirt-tail longer in back than in front, the polo shirt was a hit.

Nor was it long before the popularity of Lacoste’s shirt expanded well beyond the tennis court – to the polo fields that earned the shirt its name, the golf course (President Eisenhower was an early convert), beach, and backyard. Increasingly the polo is a staple as well in the work place, and not only on Casual Fridays. Some tips:

• Polo shirts should fit but not too tightly. In other words, they should drape over your body but not reveal too much. As any magician would advise, leave a little mystery!

• Sleeves should hit midway on your Bi-cep's, running no more than 2/3 down your upper arm.

• Stick a finger between your Bi-cep's and your sleeve. You can’t? This means it’s time to order up a size. Similarly, if there is a lot of room, size downward.

• Be sure the shirt’s tail doesn’t go beyond midway past your buttocks. Otherwise, it will wad up if you tuck in the shirt. Not a nice look.

• Most stylists recommend you button at least one of the buttons.

• Nix undershirts beneath polos, say the experts.

• Your staple supply of polos should include black, white, and blue. But don’t hesitate to add pinks, purples, reds, and greens for some variety and fun.

• While everyone agrees that polos work well with shorts, khakis, and slacks, the jury remains out regarding combining a polo with a jacket. If you opt for this look, choose a single colored polo and a jacket with a relaxed fit.
